A Closer Look at Louis Vuitton Spring 2016 Menswear Collection

While travelling leaves most of us only memories, Louis Vuitton men’s artistic director Kim Jones took it more than just visiting different countries but a facet of treasure-full of inspirations for his next collection then coming back to Paris for Louis Vuitton.

Last year in Myanmar, Jones came across a tribe whose handmade costumes (loosely cut and bearing dynamic stripes) brought to mind modern streetwear and a whiff of the Eighties hip-hop scene. More recently in Japan, he discovered Kobe leather—named after the pampered cows that produce that prized melt-in-your mouth beef.

“It takes months and months to make,” Jones said during a preview, showing off chic flight jackets in the textured skin, dyed indigo blue. “It has to dry in the sun—and it’s been raining in Japan.”

Jones dappled exotic prints and embroideries, mainly plucked from Southeast Asia, across traditional Ivy League silhouettes, yielding a youth-infused collection—but one made from the most precious of materials.

He hit on souvenir jackets, also sending out sweatshirt versions and similar pajama sets decorated with birds of paradise, magnificent cranes and mischievous monkeys lodged in bamboo.

This season, the Louis Vuitton Men’s collection is a celebration of the similarities in a global style rather than its differences. Both transposing and transforming traditional and contemporary dress codes from Thailand’s Lahu tribe to America’s Ivy League, the Louis Vuitton collection playfully takes its place as part of that pantheon, and that global language of fashion.

Nile Rodgers made the music for the show, introducing it in a showbizzy "put your hands together" way. But that fitted with the flash and shine of the clothes as Kim Jones takes us to his universe, where rich details, tradition and craftsmanship are paired with technical innovation adapted to the modern travelling elite.

It's that time of the year again to heed Nicolas Ghesquière's invites for this year's Louis Vuitton Women Fall Fashion Show at the Fondation Louis Vuitton and watch it LIVE online at The Manila Urbanite.

There will be a strong 70s vibe to be expected across the collection as creative director Nicolas Ghesquière proposes leather coats with narrow shoulders in velvet or suede-trimmed fur, choosing warm, neutral hues. He reworks flared pants using tapestry patterns, adds new proportions to tweed and revisits denim with geometric cuts, contrasting leather inserts and visible stitching, and expect to spot colors like rosewood, poppy red, ivory, caramel, mustard, indigo, concrete, milk white, sand, black, aviation blue, and cherry red.

Not to mention, playing (finally) with patchwork both on the accessories such as rigid clutches and monogram print leather handbags, thin printed silk scarves, crocodile print leather pointy boots, pointy pumps with strap, leather bags with contrasting trimming and handle, furry boots, and patchwork bags, as well as on the high-necked tapered knit dresses.

Donatella Versace gone minimal? Versace S/S 2015 Ready-To-Wear Collection

With designers across the luxury world grappling on how to make useful clothes at a time when their clients’ lifestyles are increasingly casual and well-designed fast fashion is everywhere, has Donatella Versace gone minimal? 

Oh yes, she did.

Focusing on simple shapes and graphic details, her tailoring was clean and stark—black jackets, skirts and pants (and exposed midriffs) outlined in demonstrative white stitching. Structured shift dresses offered a Sixties respite from all-Seventies overload.

These worked the charming side of sexy in several variations—laser-cut grids over politely skimpy pastel underpinnings, peekaboo grommet numbers and a feisty print that upsized the house chain and Medusa motifs.

Versace applied the Greek key with irreverent precision, sometimes enlarging its sharp angles to splice up and spice up the mood. This was especially appealing in an evening group crafted from color blocks of crystal mesh and organza.

It may seem like an experiment in relativism but a smart move for Versace to undertake at this time, sending a message pondered what wardrobe choices to offer today’s Versace woman, a memo to self crystallized: “Be bold with less."

“I didn’t look back. I tried to strip off all the unnecessary,” said Donatella Versace during a preview, that led to spring’s template.

WATCH: Burberry Prorsum x London Collections Men S/S 2015

In the recent London Collections: Men (LC: M), the creative mind and pioneer behind Burberry's digital-phase luxury—Christopher Bailey has gone throwback on prints and analogue in showcasing his spring-summer 2015 menswear collection at the Kensington Palace Gardens.

Inspired around British travel writer and novelist Bruce Chatwin, elegant hand-painted fonts and artworks were all the rage as seen onto trainers, gilt-edged oversize notebooks, portfolios, and travel satchel (bags).

The rich palette of colours applied to co-ordinated looks of double denim, loose velveteen trouser, gabardine and seersucker were all seemed sourced from the covers and bindings of Britain in Pictures, an instructive 132-volume edition published in the 1940s. Some of the cover designs featured on T-shirts and silk scarves that wreathed around their wearers.

With live performance from singer/pianist Benjamin Clementine—in a full-throated voice that reminds us of Nina Simone.

Tonal saturation, dusty bright reds and yellows, a few youthful shades of aqua greens and optic whites were transported up and down on an open-roofed runway.

Bailey said the Britist writer, Bruce Chatwin, became this season's muse "because of his relaxed, easy spirit and his curious mind".

"I like the fact that these two worlds co-exist [old forms of communication like books and paper vs. digital and new media]. I have always believed in new media. And I really believe in print – and craft, and poetry, and bookbinding... I find the art of words very inspiring," according to Bailey.

Returning to the origins of the Louis Vuitton legend—on the Cote d’Azure, creative director Nicolas Ghesquiere is debuting his Cruise collection in a place where the arts of travel, luxury and escapism reside in perfect equilibrium. His acclaimed AW14 collection for the house is anything to go by, it will be a very exciting show.

This will be the first time a fashion show has been held at the Monaco Palace Square, and will reinforce Louis Vuitton’s longstanding relationship with Monaco—the house first served the Monaco Royal Family over a century ago.

Louis Vuitton fans worldwide can expect glamour from Ghesquiere’s second showcase, which is set to be in the presence of Her Serene Highness Princess Charlene of Monaco, as the collection is reflective of the location.

Alexander McQueen Savage Beauty Exhibit

If you're one of those who cried a river and missed Alexander McQueen Savage Beauty in 2011, then now is your chance. After held Metropolitan Museum of Art's eighth most visited exhibition in its 141-year history, the Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty exhibition is coming to London.

"I am thrilled to announce that the V&A will bring this wonderful exhibition to London to celebrate the extraordinary creative talent of one of the most innovative designers of recent times. Lee Alexander McQueen was brought up in London, studied here and based his globally successful McQueen fashion brand here - by staging the exhibition at the V&A it feels like we are bringing his work home," said Martin Roth, director of the V&A.

Curated by the V&A's senior curator of fashion Claire Wilcox, the London exhibition will be based on the original MET version, with Andrew Bolton - who worked on the New York exhibition - acting as consultant curator.

According to Jonathan Akeroyd, chief executive officer of Alexander McQueen, "Savage Beauty is a story telling of the most imaginative and talented designer of our time. We are incredibly proud as a house to be able to showcase Lee's visionary body of work in London as a celebration of his legacy and an inspiration to a future generation."

The retrospective, which covers the collection and spectrum of McQueen's career from his 1992 MA graduate show to his unfinished autumn/winter 2010 collection (he committed suicide in February 2010), was originally displayed in New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art from May 4 to August 7 2011.

Its run time was extended by a week due to popular demand and it became the eighth most popular in the Met's 141-year history - behind Treasures of Tutankhamun (1978), Mona Lisa (1963), and Picasso (2010) - boasting a total of 661,509 visitors.

Supported by American Express and put on in partnership with Swarovski, it will cost £16 to visit, with concessions available and V&A members going free.

Tickets are now available as announced by V&A last April 24th that it will host the exhibition from March 14 to July 19, 2015.
